The Community of Madrid will take into account the number of failures to promote the course in Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) and will recover both the numerical grades and Philosophy as an optional subject in the curriculum, according to the draft decree of the Governing Council to which it has had access Europa Press.

“For the Government of the Community of Madrid, education is fundamental, it is the true social lift through which any family, regardless of their purchasing power, will allow their children and young people to achieve all their goals in the future” , declared the regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, when asked about the issue, during a visit to the municipality of Tielmes.

The regional leader has argued that life “is not easy, that nobody gives you anything for free” and that, for all this, they want “the new generations to be well prepared, well trained in the face of difficulties and adversity.” They are committed to a public education “that has the grades, that recognizes the effort, that helps those who are left behind, that rewards those who make the most effort and those who go further”.

Specifically, and regarding the promotion of a course student, it will be done when they have passed all the subjects or areas studied, as well as when they have a negative evaluation in one or two subjects. They will also be promoted when the teaching team considers that the nature of the subjects not passed allows them to successfully continue the following year and it is estimated that they have “favorable recovery expectations and that said promotion will be beneficial for their academic evolution.”

To facilitate decision-making on the promotion of students by the teaching teams, they may take into consideration that a student will repeat a year when he or she has a negative evaluation in three or more subjects.

Likewise, exceptionally, they may decide to promote a student with a negative evaluation in three subjects when several assumptions occur together.

These are that two of the subjects with a negative evaluation are not simultaneously Spanish Language and Literature and Mathematics and that the teaching team considers that the nature of the subjects with a negative evaluation “does not prevent the student from successfully following the next course, which has favorable expectations recovery and that promotion will benefit their academic evolution.

The decisions of the teaching team on the promotion or qualification of the student will attend to the achievement of the objectives, the degree of acquisition of the established competences and the assessment of the measures that favor the progress of the same, and will be adopted by a qualified majority of two thirds, prior deliberation, which will be recorded in the minutes, according to this rule.

The other decisions will be adopted by consensus and, if this is not possible, the criterion of the absolute majority will be adopted, that is, more than half of the members that make up the student’s teaching team.

numerical grades
On the other hand, the results of the evaluation will be expressed in the following terms: insufficient (IN), sufficient (SU), good (BI), remarkable (NT) and outstanding (SB).

The evaluation of the specific competences of each subject or area will be graded with numerical values ​​between one and ten points without decimals. “We have to take into account that the failures are important, if the paper is worth nothing or if the titles are worth nothing, then what will all the effort be worth?”, said the regional president.

In addition, the results of the evaluation expressed in the terms referred to in the previous section will be related to the qualifications, in such a way that insufficient (IN) will be indicated for qualifications with values ​​between one and four, sufficient (SF) for the rating with a value of five, good (BI) for a rating with a value of six, notable (NT) for a rating with a value of seven or eight, and outstanding (SB) for a rating with a value of nine or ten.

On the other hand, the Madrid Government project also includes that students who obtain a grade of ten in a given subject may be awarded an honorable mention provided that the result obtained is the result of “excellent academic achievement coupled with effort and particularly noteworthy interest in the subject”.

Honorable mentions will be awarded by the didactic coordination department responsible for the subject, at the proposal of the professor who taught it, or of the professors if there is more than one group.

The number of honorable mentions per subject in a course may not exceed 10% of the number of students enrolled in that subject in the course. The attribution of the honorable mention will be consigned in the evaluation documents with the expression ‘Mention’ after said qualification.

philosophy and history
As for the subjects, Philosophy is set as an optional compulsory offer in 4th ESO. Electives will be added by Order. In addition, the alternative to Religion will be defined, to prevent religion from being considered a burden as it is an additional subject.

Also, specific contents are incorporated that allow contextualizing knowledge (fundamental scientific and mathematical theories, physical laws, authors and most representative works of History, Literature and Art, etc.).

“The minimum teachings of the State lack a concretion in knowledge, necessary for the students to put these skills and competences into practice” , they point out from the regional Executive.

In the specific case of Geography and History, the chronological study of History will be maintained, as well as the study of physical and political maps.

In Spanish Language and Literature, the bases of grammar that were absent (adjectives or pronouns) have been completed and the curriculum has been completed with the most relevant authors of literature (Golden Age or Generation of ’98). Importance is given to learning public speaking, writing and summarizing.

In Geography and History. The curriculum has been completed and the chronological line has been extended in greater depth, specifying the generic and generalist wording included in Royal Decree 217/2022.

Roman Hispania, Spanish cities (in geography) and geographical discoveries are included. Likewise, the elements of the physical environment are incorporated, such as the main geographical features and bioclimatic areas, the movements of the Earth, the continents, oceans and seas, the Jewish legacy, the legacy of Spain in America, the political and territorial organization of Spain, the EU member states, ETA terrorism, etc.

Math
In Mathematics, the hierarchy of operations, the square root, sequences, the Ruffini rule, among others, are included. It has been specified and, above all, “used a more direct and easy to understand language.”

The absolute value of an integer is also included, obtaining, from its factorial decomposition, the greatest common divisor and the least common multiple of two numbers, the arithmetic and geometric progressions and the division and factorization of polynomials.

The most important incorporation occurs in the 4th year of ESO in both Mathematics modalities (A and B, which students must choose depending on the type of studies they plan to carry out in the future), by adding the logarithms, definition and properties .

In addition, in Mathematics B, which is usually chosen by students heading towards Baccalaureate, the resolution of equations is also added , both polynomials of degree greater than two, and exponential, logarithmic and irrational.
